How It Works

Running calculators work with three interrelated variables: pace, time, and distance. Given any two, you can calculate the third.

Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace

Pace is expressed as time per unit distance — minutes:seconds per kilometre (min/km) or minutes:seconds per mile (min/mi). Speed is the inverse: distance per unit time (km/h or mph).

Converting between pace and speed:
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mi)

Pace conversion between km and miles:
Pace (min/mi) = pace (min/km) × 1.60934
Pace (min/km) = pace (min/mi) ÷ 1.60934

Standard race distances:
- 5K: 5.000 km (3.107 mi)
- 10K: 10.000 km (6.214 mi)
- Half Marathon: 21.0975 km (13.109 mi)
- Marathon: 42.195 km (26.219 mi)

Example: Running a 5K in 25:00.
Pace = 25:00 ÷ 5 km = 5:00 min/km = 8:03 min/mi
Speed = 60 ÷ 5 = 12.0 km/h = 7.46 mph

What is a good running pace?

A typical recreational runner finishes a 5K in 25–35 minutes (5:00–7:00 min/km). Elite male runners average under 3:00 min/km for a 5K; elite women under 3:20 min/km. For beginners, completing the distance at any pace is the goal. "Good" is entirely relative to your fitness level and goals.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply min/km by 1.60934 to get min/mile. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8:02.8 min/mile. This calculator handles the conversion automatically.

What is a negative split?

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first half. It is generally the most efficient pacing strategy for endurance events because it avoids early glycogen depletion and metabolic debt. Most world records in distance running are set with even or negative splits.

How do I set a realistic race goal?

Your recent training pace at a comfortable effort (conversational pace) usually corresponds to a race pace 10–15% faster due to adrenaline and race conditions. A longer race will be run at a slower average pace than a shorter one. Use the projected finish time table to estimate what your current training pace implies for different race distances.
